Just back from an incredible trip to Kenya! It’s been 5 1/2 years since our last visit, and so much has changed in Meru and Tharaka. The roads have improved, I could use my hair straighteners every morning, and the toilet facilities are better. The accommodation in Tharaka has also seen a boost, with two places even having swimming pools. Jordan’s palace was an oasis—a lovely, relaxing spot where we paused for a rest and a cold drink.
We participated in several goat distributions, and it was fantastic to reconnect with so many sponsored children and their parents. Each child received a Gala goat, known for its durability in Tharaka’s climate and its high rate of twin births. Many of the children who had recently joined our program were thrilled to receive their first goat, while others who have been sponsored for several years now have herds ranging from 8 to 16 goats.
Talking with the parents, it was clear they were very happy. The children have been relatively healthy this year, with minimal use of the NHIF insurance (National Health Insurance Fund). The blankets and mattresses they received earlier in the year were much appreciated, ensuring the children are warmer at night and getting better sleep.
We also took the opportunity to share a short devotion with the families and handed out sweets and balloons to the children.
The parents expressed their gratitude by showering us with gifts, for which we were deeply appreciative.
